Coronary Interventions

What Are Coronary Interventions?
Coronary interventions are non-surgical procedures used to treat narrowed or blocked arteries in the heart (called coronary arteries). These blockages can reduce blood flow and lead to chest pain (angina) or a heart attack.

The most common type is called Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI), also known as angioplasty.

Why Are They Done?
They help:

  • Relieve chest pain (angina)

  • Improve blood flow to the heart

  • Prevent heart attacks

  • Improve quality of life and physical activity

  • Sometimes avoid the need for open-heart surgery

Types of Coronary Interventions:

1. Coronary Angioplasty with Stent

  • A small balloon is inflated at the blocked site to open up the artery.

  • A stent (a tiny mesh tube) is placed to keep it open.

2. Balloon Angioplasty (without Stent)

  • Only a balloon is used to widen the artery.

  • Usually done in selected cases.
